SummaryWe transform the Abelian Higgs model in three dimensions (i.e. the Grinzburg-Landau theory) to a disorder field theory. The new fields describe the grand canonical ensemble of vortex lines in the superconductor and take a nonzero expectation in the normal state (signalizing their proliferation). The disorder theory allows for a simple determination of the tricritical point where the second-order phase transition changes to first. This happens for a Grinzburg-Landau parameter (= ratio of… Expand

Dual Description of the Superconducting Phase Transition

- Physics
- 1995

The dual approach to the Ginzburg-Landau theory of a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor is reviewed. The dual theory describes a grand canonical ensemble of fluctuating closed magnetic… Expand

Abstract The Ginzburg–Landau theory is analyzed in the case of small dimension superconductors, a couple of orders of magnitude above the coherence length, where the theory is still valid but quantum… Expand

Critical Behavior of a Supersymmetric Extension of the Ginzburg-Landau Model

We make a connection between quantum phase transitions in condensed matter systems, and supersymmetric gauge theories that are of interest in the particle physics literature. In particular, we point… Expand

Tricritical Point in Quantum Phase Transitions of the Coleman-Weinberg Model at Higgs Mass

- Physics

Abstract The tricritical point, which separates first and second order phase transitions in three-dimensional superconductors, is studied in the four-dimensional Coleman–Weinberg model, and the… Expand

A finite temperature study of the (2+1) Abelian Higgs model

The authors study the phase diagram of the finite temperature (2+1) Abelian Higgs model. They observe, for low values of the quartic scalar self-coupling, the existence of three phases separated by… Expand

Functional renormalization group approach to color superconducting phase transition

Abstract We study the high-temperature phase transitions for the Abelian and SU(2) Higgs models, using the exact renormalization group. The evolution equation for a properly defined coarse-grained… Expand

Magnetic permeability of near-critical 3d abelian Higgs model and duality

The three-dimensional abelian Higgs model has been argued to be dual to a scalar field theory with a global U(1) symmetry. We show that this duality, together with the scaling and universality… Expand

Time-Dependent Ginzburg-Landau Theory and Duality

- Physics
