Research Questions

Write research questions using FINER and PICO

The primary objective of any research study is to answer the research question. The research question is the foundation of everything empirical. Research questions are grounded in previous research and can fill "knowledge gaps" in the empirical literature. Research questions serve as the basis by which meaningful contributions are made to a given body of knowledge. The research question has an impact on all of the following aspects of applied research:
  1. Research designs are chosen to answer research questions.
  2. Statistics are used to answer research questions.
  3. Variables are chosen and collected to answer research questions.
  4. The population, intervention, comparator, and outcome (PICO) are all defined in research questions.
  5. Epidemiological calculations are used to answer research questions about diseases in human populations.
  6. Diagnostic testing calculations are used to answer research questions about diagnostic tests.
  7. Databases are structured, maintained, and managed based on research questions.
  8. Surveys are created to answer research questions.
  9. Psychometrics are used to answer research questions.

There is a mnemonic device often cited in the medical literature that serves as a framework for creating research questions. The framework, FINER, stands for feasible, interesting, novel, ethical, and relevant

Research questions are answered by research designs, statistics, variables, epidemiology calculations, diagnostic testing calculations, databases, surveys, and psychometrics.
