Survey methodology

There are four reasons for using a survey methodology in applied research

At this point, researchers need to select the survey methodology that will best answer their research question. From a survey methodological standpoint, there are four primary reasons for constructing a survey:

1. Establish the prevalence of a construct in a given population

2. Compare "known-groups" in a given population on a construct

3. Validation of a construct within a nomological or theoretical framework

4. Measuring for the change in a construct over time in a given population

Survey methodology and data collection

When conducting a survey research project, researchers are taking a "cross-section" of the population at one point in time and making generalizations back to the overall population. Thus, all surveys are designated as cross-sectional research designs in terms of methodology. There are two ways to collect data when using a cross-sectional survey design:

1. An observational survey methodology entails one-on-one or group observations with participants from the population of interest in the actual environment that the construct is theorized to exist. This type of data collection method can yield thick and rich data related to phenomena and existential experiences. However, it can be extremely time-intensive and data analysis requires rigorous and thorough methods put forth by researchers in an objective and credible fashion.

Because of the varying methods and existential phenomenological understanding of constructs in different populations, no specific method of data collection can be applied to understanding all constructs. Phenomenological, ground theory, ethnography, narrative, and case study designs are often employed in qualitative studies to understand constructs and how they are experienced by members of the population.

2. A self-report survey methodology is utilized for collecting population data related to a construct of interest. Sample participants quantify their personal feelings, thoughts, or behaviors related to constructs.
