Within-subjects designs are the most powerful type of research design because each participant serves as their own control. Multiple observations of the outcome can be taken as well to understand longitudinal effects. There is always a drastic decrease in the needed sample size when using within-subjects designs. Both large and small effect sizes are easier to detect when using within-subjects designs.
