One-sided hypothesis

Researchers use a one-sided hypothesis when the direction of the effect is thought to be known

When researchers use a one-sided hypothesis, they specify either an increase (positive) or decrease (negative) in the outcome as a result of treatment. They are making a statement about the direction of the treatment effect.

With a one-sided hypothesis, the alpha level of level of significance exists wholly on one side of the distribution. An alpha value of .05 is still used and beta values of .20 are normally accepted to meet statistical power for these types of hypotheses.
